Beginning Band

Supporting The Performing Arts in the Fair Haven Public Schools

Advisor: Miss Marino (instrumental and general music teacher)

Students can begin taking lessons on a band instrument (woodwinds, brass, percussion) in 5th grade. They attend one 30-minute pull-out lesson once every 6-day cycle, during which they learn and practice fundamental playing techniques and music reading skills. There is also time set aside before school on Wednesdays for either extra help or full ensemble rehearsals.

Beginning Band musicians apply their skills to preparing and performing short pieces throughout the year in class, and perform on evening concerts twice a year: the Winter Concert (December) and Spring Concert (May).

In 6th-8th grade, band members have the opportunity to play in Intermediate Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, and various small ensembles, as well as to audition for Jazz Band. All of these more advanced ensembles include small-group instruction, large ensemble rehearsals, and additional performance opportunities.
